The Sony D-515 was a flagship Discman released in 1992, positioned as a more advanced model than the D-311, which was also manufactured that year. It was the first Sony Discman to incorporate Sony's Electric Shock Protection (ESP) technology. This technology functions by reading ahead, spinning the CD faster, and storing the data in a buffer. The D-515 features a three-second buffer, whereas some newer Discman models have ten-second buffers. ESP can be enabled or disabled as needed. The LCD screen includes an animated indicator resembling a pot being filled with water droplets. Additional notable features include a 1-Bit DAC and three levels of Bass Boost (DDS). A noteworthy aspect of the design is the battery compartment, which accommodates either a Sony BP2EX proprietary battery or two AA batteries. A spring connector for the AA batteries flips out when the slider inside the battery compartment is moved, showcasing a clever design. This thoughtful engineering allows for continued use of the D-515 on the go. Commendations to the Sony engineers for this innovation.
The build quality of the D-515 is exemplary, as anticipated from a flagship model produced during this exceptional period. It features a metal lid with a distinctive shark grey glossy finish. The chrome buttons contribute significantly to its premium aesthetic.
The sound quality is impressive, although it does not markedly surpass that of the D-311, renowned as one of Sony's best-sounding Discman models. The soundstage is clear and well-defined, with precise tonal quality and exceptionally clear vocals. Instrument separation and imaging are outstanding, allowing for easy identification of the positions of the instruments and the vocalist. This is truly remarkable!
