The Sony Discman D-88 is among the smallest Discman models ever produced. Another CD player of similar size is the D-82 CD Walkman, also manufactured by Sony. The D-88 measures 95mm by 95mm, making it even smaller than a CD jewel case, yet it can play standard 12cm / 120mm CDs. In contrast, the D-82 is limited to playing 8cm mini CDs. To achieve such a compact size, certain compromises were necessary. The battery is not built-in; instead, an external battery slides into the top of the D-88. Remarkably, even with the external battery, the unit's length is only 120mm.
You might be curious about how this compact unit plays 12cm CDs. The mechanism involves an internal lever that allows adjustment of the pick-up between the 8cm and 12cm positions. When playing a 12cm CD, part of the disc remains exposed. Scroll down the page to see a 12cm CD placed inside the D-88.
