The Sony Discman D-88 is one of the smallest Discman ever made. The other similar size CD player is the D-82 CD Walkman made by Sony as well. The D-88 measures 95mm by 95mm, it is even smaller than a CD jewel case yet it is capable of playing a regular size 12cm / 120 mm CDs whereas the D-82 can only play 8cm mini CDs. To keep the size this small, compromises had to be made. The battery is not built in, there's a external battery that slides into the top side of the D-88. Even with the external battery, the unit only measures 120mm in length, pretty amazing!
So, you are wondering how this tiny unit plays 12cm CDs. They way it works is that there's a lever inside to allow you to move the pick-up between the 8cm and the 12cm position. While playing back a 12cm CD, part of the CD is exposed. Scroll down the page to see a 12cm CD placed inside the D-88.
