The Sony D-J50 is an exceptionally slim CD player, with a thickness only slightly greater than that of a CD jewel case, even with the battery included. This is achieved through advanced technology integrated into the unit, including a newly developed optical pickup laser coupler, a thin brushless motor, highly integrated circuits, and other innovations by Sony. The familiar ring shape makes a return on the lid of the D-J50. In previous models, this motif was removed to accommodate controls; however, in this design, all buttons are conveniently located on the front. The rechargeable battery's design is reminiscent of the slits found on a CD jewel case.
Released in 1991 as the flagship Discman, the D-J50 debuted alongside the renowned D-303. It offers exceptional sound quality for such a compact Discman. The audio detail is impressive, with a wide and precise soundstage and tight bass that avoids any hint of oversaturation. The clarity is outstanding, making it highly recommended for listening to jazz, classical music, and vocals.
