Sony Discman D303 Portable CD Player

The D303, launched in 1991, is regarded as one of the finest-sounding Sony Discman models ever produced. It was the first portable CD player to incorporate 1-bit digital-to-analog conversion, which enhances power efficiency, reduces costs, and minimizes conversion errors. The D-303 features an elegant, smooth, contoured design, with well-positioned and clearly labeled buttons. Its integrated LCD screen provides essential information such as track number, elapsed time, and play mode.
This CD player introduces several innovative features. Upon inserting a CD and closing the lid, the LCD displays the total number of tracks and playing time without requiring the play button to be pressed. Additionally, Sony engineers included an auto shutoff feature to conserve power when a CD is loaded but not in play or pause mode. The player delivers approximately 3 hours of playback with two alkaline batteries, while the BP-2EX rechargeable battery offers 2 to 2.5 hours of use after a 30-minute charge. An AC adaptor is also provided for continuous listening. The D-303 was priced at around $330 and was available in a titanium or black finish. It is noteworthy that in 1991, there was another flagship product above the D-303, the D-J50.
